It was Thursday night, the children wouldn't be at their dad's again until Wednesday, so poor Dakota was on her own with her dad until the kids came home again. She'd taken a walk with her dad earlier, but he had had to go to a meeting, so he'd left Dakota in the kennel when he'd left, he didn't realize that she had found a break in the fencing, not visible to her dad's eye but just big enough that the little forty pound Dalmatian could slip easily out and go wandering. Her silver pawprint tag jingled as she squeezed her way out the split in the kennel fence. Her dark blue nylon collar showed up well upon her spotted frame. Princess Dakota was free in moments and padded toward the town Square.
Dakota's dainty paws with their black nails carried her effortlessly over the concrete sidewalks. She picked up her pace to an easy trot and turned toward the familiar sidewalks. Her dark brown-black eyes took in her surroundings. As she was beginning to pass the park Dakota paused and then darted across the road, horns blared but she paid them no mind her selective hearing kicking in. She was on a single minded mission to the park. There were children there, and they were almost the same age as Dakota's children. As she moved to the edge of the park path, she stopped and sat, her tail waved as she yipped toward the children on the picnic blanket ahead of her.
The girl with the blonde hair looked up at the yip and got to her feet, ready to dart to the Dalmatian sitting there, but her mother's sharp voice and a yank of her father's hand, pulled the girl back to the blanket. With a soft whimper, Dakota got up and turned away, her head, ears and tail low as she walked slowly along the sidewalk. Even the other children wouldn't spend time with her, or their parents wouldn't let them, fearing she was a stray that would harm them. With a soft sigh, Kota found a spot in the shade of a tree and lay down. If she could have shed tears, she would have, but she was only a dog. She didn't want to go back to dad's yet, it was too early.
She tucked her paws under her chest and lay in the shade, feeling miserable and alone. She just wanted someone to pet her, someone to play fetch with her, someone to play tag with her. All the things her children would do with her. She sighed again and tucked her muzzle against her right shoulder and closed her eyes as she curled into a pathetic little ball and let her mind drift, back into the distance, back to yesterday when she had been on the top of the world. Back to when she had been racing the kids along the lake beach, chasing them as they splashed into the water. Her gloomy feelings began to recede but still lingered there, just on the edge of her consciousness. She wasn't fully present here yet. she didn't want to be. She was in a happy, better world...for the moment.
