The wind was gentle, whispering softly as it moved through the needles of the trees above, the branches shivering in delight. The sun, though strong on this spring's day, struggled to penetrate the canopy. Its rays only dappled the forest floor, creating small patches of warmth on an otherwise chilly day. The temperature wasn't unpleasant, her coat was thick and kept her sheltered from even the coldest of weather, but she found it refreshing. Tongue lolled out, flush red with blood, a light pant expelling small clouds of vapor. She had run here. Enjoyed the freedom to move and go as and where she pleased. She had stretched her legs, felt the muscles tighten, pushed herself, felt the burn of her lungs, and enjoyed every second of it. There was a sense of uneasy happiness that came with no longer being tied to her family pack. Happy was the ability to do as she pleased without fearing retribution from an angry alpha-parent, but uneasy was her life without the structure a social creature like the wolf must have. She had been alone for a year, an entire year, and had enjoyed her freedom during that time. Uneasiness had its way of getting under her skin, constantly reminding her of her craving for social structure. It was time she ended her solitude and found another wolf to interact with.
The rock jutted from the hillside like a thorn from a paw, its tip nearly ten feet from the ground below. The wolf who stood upon it was neither thin nor thick, tall nor short. She was decidedly average. Her coat was a mottling of greys, blacks, browns, and tans. Her shoulders and ears were darkest, lightening to an off-white beneath her belly and jaw. There was one distinctive feature about her, however, a peculiar twist of nature; Beneath her eyes were grey patches that were roughly in the shape of upside-down triangles. Wolves, though some might look quite similar, always had some distinctive facial markings that set them apart and made them unique. These under-eye triangles were hers. Amber eyes peered from above the marks, scanning the terrain below. There wasn't much to be seen through the thick forest of pine and the denser yet undergrowth. This was pleasing to her instincts. It meant that, while she could not see easily, she could not be seen easily, either. This was the place most wolves dreamed of finding. And she had found it. But what was this discovery without someone to enjoy it with her?
Once again her instinct boiled up from the pit of her chest, burning and aching a hole through her heart. She had been alone long enough. Now was the time to find more of her kind. The wolf lifted her skull to the canopy above, eyes narrowing to slits, lips forming a loose oval. The howl that came forth emanated from her very chest, pushing itself out and up with force and clarity. The single note rose in pitch, lifting itself from the forest floor to the very heavens, echoing throughout the forest and across the mountain. I'm here! It said. I'm here! Any true wolf would know the message of the sound, a cry for interaction, a summons of anyone who is willing to come. Many would not be able to resist the wolf's instinct to answer the call. At least one would come. If there was one to do so. The howl began to fade as breath ran short, its volume falling. With a slight exhalation, the wolf closed her muzzle and lifted her ears. Perhaps there was one out there to answer. She would listen. She would wait.
