The Rainbow Fox [shyan]

It'd been a few days since Magalie had noticed the colorful little fox in her new packs territory. It was in her best interest not to be too nosy but it was just too difficult with this new 'rainbow fox' running around. He'd been talking to Tybalt and she had figured out through the other members of the pack that this new fox would be a part of their pack. While she'd gotten a chance to greet the rest of the foxes that have been invited to live with them this one had passed under the radar.

She'd seen him head off towards the meadow and had decided to follow up. Magalie kept a decent distance from the new male and had done her best to stay downwind from him. Despite all of this effort, she certainly was no detective and if the male wasn't too preoccupied with his own thoughts, he would have been able to figure out that someone was following him.

When it finally appeared that they were alone, Magalie spoke up. "Oh, hello there!" She pretended to sound surprised to see him. "So funny seeing you here, friend! I saw you talking to Tybalt the other day and... I should probably introduce myself." The little white fox lowered her head, just a few feet off to the right of the newcomer now. She kept a friendly stance, trying to convey that she wasn't trying to hurt him. She was just too curious about this fellows funny colors!

"I'm Magalie. Sorry if I interrupted you I just... I saw you around the den pretty frequently and I just wanted to say hello." This had all gone so much smoother in her head, really. She had planned to ask him why he was so funny looking and then be done with it, but that didn't seem in the best of taste right now. Tybalt had laughed when she asked about his vibrant colors compared to her pale ones. She couldn't help but wonder of this little fox would have a similar reaction.

It had been a quick entrance into the pack. Tybalt proved to be a good leader and hopefully Lycaon would find himself as the healer within the next few moons. Besides meeting Tybalt, Lycaon hadn’t seen anyone else. The forest seemed fairly empty and staying around to see if anyone would catch his scent didn’t particularly interest him. Without much to say Lycaon had dismissed himself from Tybalt’s arena and had taken to exploring on his own. The forest was quiet beautiful, almost making the poor boy homesick, but there was no way he could return. His parents were both buried peacefully in the mountain and he had no ties to the mountains anymore. He needed to be his own fox but the task was proving more and more difficult each day. He hadn’t met a single fox, dog, or wolf. Not that he really wanted to see anyone; his antisocial nature was a major factor is his lack of appeal to the vixens, but he wanted someone to love him for him not for some social butterfly that he would never be.

The meadows open variety piqued his interest, and the birds called out in song as the spring weather took over the land. The flower were blooming with such variety that it amazed Lycaon. His dark shaded pelt made it hard for him to stand the high noon sun beating down on his pelt, but a cool breeze was blowing through the valley and ruffling his fur. The breeze also brought a new scent and new opportunity, but the scent was inconsistent and it confused Lycaon. The scent seemed new but every time he got a whiff of it, it disappeared just as quick leaving him confused once again. Turning in a circle he didn’t see anything to out of the ordinary, until he saw the girls whitish pelt hiding amongst the colors. Turning back around he continued to walk chuckling to himself. Would the white ghost confront him at some point? Well if he or she decided to he would be ready.

Taking one last glimpse of the figure, he realized that whoever was following was a fox! But, it’s white… Now Lycaon was very confused and stopped. Setting his rump on the ground, he waited to hear the voice of the stranger, "Oh, hello there! So funny seeing you here, friend! I saw you talking to Tybalt the other day and... I should probably introduce myself." Lycaon looked up at the female that had followed him. Her white pelt glimmered in the noon light almost making a reflective shield for all the colors that surrounded the bunch. She stood in a relaxed position, conveying her neutrality and her friendliness. The girls mouth kept moving and letting loose more words and this was quiet funny to Lycaon. "I'm Magalie. Sorry if I interrupted you I just... I saw you around the den pretty frequently and I just wanted to say hello." Lycaon nodded his head, though he couldn’t seem to wrap his head around the fact he hadn’t seen her before!

“I find it funny you thought I didn’t know you had followed me.” Lycaon smirked at the girl and chuckled quietly, “It’s nice to meet you though, Magalie! I am Lycaon.” Standing up Lycaon bowed to the girl and took his seat once again as the smirk reappeared on his face. “What brings you to me, on such a beautiful day misses?”

It was a relief to see that this new fellow was friendly. She'd been following him for some while and some of the more paranoid foxes may have taken her for a thread. This colorful male showed his teeth, but not in a snarl. He was smiling, which was quite a shock to the little female.

Why was she here? Well, the truth was embarrassing but they were alone and lying would bring nothing but trouble. Magalie found that it was less embarrassing to be honest than to be found a liar later. "Your coat." She responded politely, dipping her head in response to the male bow. Lycaon. What an interesting and unique name. Magalie decided she liked it.

"You see, I saw you talking to Tybalt. I've lived with he and the other members for a while now and I'm the only white fox there! The rest of them have gorgeous orange coats and sometimes I think I'll be the odd one out forever." It was something she'd only realized recently, but it had weighed heavy on her heart for some time. It was difficult being different, even when it was something so simple as appearance. No one had alienated her for it but it was still on the forefront of her mind.

"But you're different too, Lycaon. Just like me. And quite beautiful, if I say so myself. Beautiful... As far as a tod can be!" Magalie found herself laughing at this. She was quite good with words but found her tongue tripping in the excitement of a new, unique friend. Someone that "looked like her", even if that only meant that they didn't look normal at all. "Are you new to the area like me?

Magalie hadn’t quiet picked up on his humorous comment but she was friendly and interesting, just from looking at her coat. His smile shocked the little vixen which surprised him. He wasn’t the most cuddly tod but he could be nice when he wanted to! He asked her why she was here and she almost looked embarrassed by what she was thinking. He cocked his head to the side and waited patiently for the answer. “Your coat.” Lycaon started lauging, tears welling up in his corners. He shoulders shook from the laughter that was escaping him. Cough-lauging Lycaon pulled himself back together and looked at Magalie offering his name up as an apology of sorts for his laughter.


"You see, I saw you talking to Tybalt. I've lived with him and the other members for a while now and I'm the only white fox there! The rest of them have gorgeous orange coats and sometimes I think I'll be the odd one out forever." He hoped he hadn’t made her feel bad for laughing, he hadn’t been laughing at her. He smiled and nodded his head in agreement. “I agree Magalie. Everyone’s coat is so orange and I walked up in my browns and backs with a few patches of orange, but for the most part I’m the color of the mountains. And Being the odd one out isn’t very fun.. No matter how many compliments your given you’ll ever quiet fit in… but your coat is one I’ve never seen before! Where are you from?” He paused in his little speech to take a breath while Magalie took her turn once again.


"But you're different too, Lycaon. Just like me. And quite beautiful, if I say so myself. Beautiful... As far as a tod can be!" Lycaon smiled and blushed lightly under his coat. He’d never gotten such a comment from a vixen like Magalie, and he’d never seen a girl such as herself and she was quiet pretty herself. “Thank you! And you yourself Magalie! Your white fur gleams like the snow back home on the mountain tops!” She started to laugh at her comment and he chuckled lightly to himself. He was very pleased to have met someone just as unique as he! She asked if he was new to the area and he nodded to her, “I actually am new to Oakwood City in general. I came from the Cascade Mountains. What about you, Magalie?”

Magalie found herself giggling like a kit. It was really something else to be in the presence of another tod. There was Tybalt, sure, but they were friendly with each other. They functioned well together and made a good team, but it had never been as casual and giddy as it was with Lycaon in this moment. Her cheeks felt hot at his compliment and she ducked her head to hide this (even though her fur did the job). He deserved answers to his questions though!

"I'm from up north. Way up north, where it snows nine months of the year. It's beautiful and I miss the snow." She sighed, lost in her memories for a moment. It'd been so long since she'd seen the fluffy white stuff that she loved to play in as a child. It was nice to know that Lycaon had experienced to. Magalie felt like this new tod was like her in many ways. He would understand her... At least, she could hope that.

"I've been in Oakwood for a few weeks now. I've lived in many other places but... I just kind of stumbled upon here. Tybalt found me by all of the funny human dens and rescued me! I wouldn't be alive I'm sure. There were so many funny looking humans and dogs." She shuddered in memory of that night. The suburbs of Oakwood were a scary place... She'd yet to wander into the city. It just seemed like such a dangerous place! Humans were so loud and their dogs were just the same. Magalie hadn't found herself very fond of them.

"I smelled mice around here when I was following... Erm. Tagging along with you." Following sounded very stalker-y. "Would you like to share one? I ate a rather large meal yesterday but I'd love to give in to a good chase!" Magalie rose to her feet, wriggling her bottom a little to swish her tail. She was only a good enough hunter not to starve, but it had always been fun to chase down her food. Not in the sense that she was killing something, but the chase was nice. "Well, are you coming, Lycaon?" She liked the way his name fell off of her tongue.

Their laughter mixed together creating a more harmonious sound then he would have thought possible. His deeper toned lyrics mixing with her lighter more angelic voice. And both of the foxes blushed shades of crimson and ducked to avoid noticeability, making them even more obvious but neither seemed to notice the other. Lycaon just couldn’t believe how similar they were and he found that he was enjoying the ladies company and wanted to continue to talk to her! There was something about the girl that just clicked felt so right! He wasn’t going to claim instant love but he found quiet beautiful as is, but he wanted to keep her as a friend at the moment and not take the chance of ruining anything. Pulling himself together Lycaon looked up at Magalie as her head was still ducked down and giggles still emitted from her body.



She quietly explained her reasoning for following—well not really following, just curiosity getting the better of her—and he couldn’t disagree with her and so he agreed politely and spent his breathe almost repeating what she had while asking where she had come from. "I'm from up north. Way up north, where it snows nine months of the year. It's beautiful and I miss the snow." Lycaon sighed deeply thinking about the wonderful capped mountains that used to be the backdrop of his home. “And I Magalie. The glimmering snow is beautiful like your coat” Lycaon added the compliment with a sheepish smile though Magalie seemed slightly preoccupied and so he quickly returned to normal. The understanding between them already made it easy for Lycaon to act normal around her, and he hoped she could be the same around him.



"I've been in Oakwood for a few weeks now. I've lived in many other places but... I just kind of stumbled upon here. Tybalt found me by all of the funny human dens and rescued me! A worried look passed over Lycaon’s face as she retold her encounter and journey through the city, though his had been much smoother he knew how scary the entirety of the place could be. He saw her shoulders shake and shudder and he reached over with his nose and nudged her gently, “It’s okay, you’re safe now. You’ve got a home with Vulpus Vasum and you’ll make a lot of new friends!” He smiled kindly at her to emphasize his words and make her feel more at home.



Magalie made mention of food and it triggered Lycaon’s stomach, as it made a low grumbling sound. Lycaon laughed with embarrassment and smiled sheepishly at Magalie, “I think my stomach spoke for me. I’d love to Magalie!” He smiled at her and mocked her positions each time though he couldn’t swing his hips nearly as smoothly as she. His tail flicking back a forth with excitement, “Well, are you coming Lycaon?” Lycaon smiled and jumped ahead of her and looked back, “Catch me if you can!” And with that Lycaon took off into the brush, laughing and feeling the adrenaline course through his veins.

Before she could get too much of a head start, Lycaon was bounding past her. This tod made her feel like a child again! He made her heart flutter. It had been a very rough beginning for the young thing on her own, and innocence wasn't something she knew anymore. Lycaon calmed these nerves though and reassured her wholeheartedly. She felt like she could forget the reason she was in Oakwood in the first place.

Magalie watched the rainbow fox disappear through the grasses and she let out a yip after him. "You'd better keep running! I'll catch you!" She remembered quickly though that it wasn't Lycaon that she was after. She began to dart after him, but kept her nose close to the ground. Alie certainly wasn't the best hunter in their little group, but she wasn't going to let a single mouse in this field pass her path!

It took her a few yards before picking up on a scent, but it became clear that she was onto something. The little white fox ducked low for cover, though not even the tall grasses could mask her stark white against the rest of the world. Her bottom rose in the air as she got ready to pounce, a fluffy white tail raising like a flag. She steadied herself and then popped up above the grasses and down onto her prey.

Magalie trotted up to the male with her kill hanging from her mouth. Her ears were pricked forward in excitement, waiting to catch the first glimpses of Lycaon's reaction. "I caught something!" The field mouse would hardly be a meal, but she dropped it to the ground with pride and inched it closer with his nose. "Think of it as a welcome gift." Her smile was gentle, though it showed hidden excitement. She was a mature, grown fox, and grown vixen's didn't hysterically giggle like kits... No matter how bad they wanted to!

Lycaon’s head start gave him the advantage over Magalie in their little game but she wasn’t too far behind him. Looking back Lycoan watched at her pure white pelt bobbed and weaved through the tall grass. She was quiet the sight to see in this urban city. Her stark white pelt glowing brightly in the sunlight and though she wasn’t concealed to well she did pretty well for herself. He heard her calling out behind him, “You better keep running! I’ll catch you!” Lycaon laughed and turned his head around and sped up slightly. Gaining a good few tails-lengths on her Lycaon slowed down into a trot and watched with curiosity as her small form ducked for something. Remembering the original reason of the chase Lycaon smiled and watched her. Her white tail flagging her motions and not shortly after she popped up and disappeared back into the tall grass.


Lycaon smiled as Magalie trotted up to him with her prey hanging limply in her mouth. “I caught something!” Lycaon nods his head and smiles; the pair was like a duo of kits again. She dropped it lightly to ground and nosed it towards him, “Think of it as a welcome gift.” His smile grew larger as he looked down at the mouse. Though small it would serve its purpose, the male had learned to live off of little food during the harsh winters. Looking up Magalie he saw her smile and all of the hidden excitement in her bodice. She seemed to be holding herself steady like there was a joke threatening to break her silence.


Lycaon took his time eating his fair share of the mouse and nosed the other half back to Magalie, “I won’t be a total hog and eat it all. You should get a share of what you worked to catch.”He smiled as he licked his chops clean of any blood that might have gotten onto his muzzle. He wasn’t exactly the cleanest eater and as there was a lady in front of him he wanted to appear decently clean.


He waited for her finish up the mouse before he started to talk again, “Would mind me asking what brought you here to Oakwood City? You sounded so fond of the mountains and it surprises me that you still came down here.”He asked gently knowing well enough that it could be a painful truth that she didn’t care to tell. He understood, knowing his own pain could get in the way of his emotions. His darker side wasn’t something he didn’t want the vixen to see, he’d already had so problems with Tybalt… He hadn’t meant to come off as rude but he didn’t do too well with other males.

The pale vixen watched her new friend munch down on the catch. He really seemed to appreciate her little gift and her muscles twitched in excitement at this. Lycaon was a gentleman, that was for sure! This was cemented in her thought as he cleaned his lips up after his meal. Though he insisted that she finish off the mouse, she only nosed at it. "Oh, I appreciate your generosity, Lycaon! I'm not very hungry though. Perhaps it can be saved."

By now, Magalie had settled back onto her haunches. Her ears twitched while she listened, and the pleasant little smile that she'd been wearing wavered a bit. She did better to hide the nerves that were bubbling up inside her. Alie couldn't possibly tell him what had drove her to Oakwood, but she also felt that lying to this male would hurt her future. It hadn't been too difficult to bend the truth with everyone else... She didn't feel guilty about telling them that she was just a wanderer. Lycaon was more important than the passing canines that she'd met in her journeys though.

"Lost love." That was simple enough. It wasn't lying, but it wasn't quite telling the truth either. Magalie felt that there would be decency in the male not to pry any further. "I adore the mountains, Lycaon. I really do. I miss the cold and seeing the sun rise from up there..." Her voice trailed off until it was nothing more than a wistful sigh. "But I live in Oakwood now! It's where I'll build a new home and a new life. I'm still young enough to do that without worry." The last sentence brought a smile to her face. Oakwood provided new opportunities that Magalie was genuinely excited for.

"What drove you from the mountains? I imagine that was a difficult decision for you as well." Alie couldn't imagine anyone leaving such a beautiful place, especially when they would blend in so well! "Your coat reminds me of them, you know. Appropriate, of course."

She twitched and moved slightly as he finished up the mouse. Though his offer was rejected she did it with a gentle gesture, “Oh, I appreciate your generosity, Lycaon! I’m not very hungry though. Perhaps it can be saved.” Lycaon nodded and picked up the last bit of the mouse and set it near the roots of a tree. His claws dug vigorously at the soft dirt making a hole in the root system so that the mouse would be well hidden. Picking up the mouse he gently dropped it down into the hole and pushed the dirt back in. Looking back at Magalie he smiled, “You’ll have to remind me to pick it up when we head out!”Lycaon padded back to Magalie.

She sat on the ground while he talked, he did have the tendency to talk to long. Her smile stretched over her face seemed slightly less genuine. Lycaon finished at let silence settle over them. Had he said something to bother her? He hoped not! That wasn’t his point or objective! He didn’t even have an objective; there was nothing behind this meeting. They had just happened to run into each other and strike up a conversation that managed to last. She finally spoke up, “Lost love.” Short and bitter sweet. She didn’t offer much towards an explanation but he wasn’t going to poke or prod her. He knew pain, and he wasn’t out to hurt anyone else. “I adore the mountains Lycaon. I really do. I miss the cold and seeing the sun rise from up there…” The following sigh finished her sentence and he understood there was nothing he could say that would make the situation better.

“But I live in Oakwood now! It’s where I’ll build a new home and a new life. I’m still young enough to so that without worry.” She smiled once again and focused back on him once again. “What drove you from the mountains? I imagine that was a difficult decision for you as well.” Your coat reminds me of them, you know. Appropriate, of course.” Lycaon nodded his head remembering that day. There wasn’t anything in the world he would have traded to bring back his mother and father. There thay would up on that mountain buried within the den he’d grown up in. “Death. I couldn’t have bared to stay up there.” He shook his head and smiled at her nodding his head towards the grass. “Care to finish our little walk?”
