An eagle in the distance screeched, jolting Oslo out of his slumber. He'd been in the grasps of a nightmare anyway, and his heart was still beating erratically. Bleary-eyed, Oslo sat up from the long grass he'd been sleeping in and looked around. The mountain in the distance loomed over him, shrouding the whole valley in its shadow. Beside him, a small stream trickled down the hillside to form a larger river a few miles away. Without standing up, Oslo reached over and dipped his large, black nose into the water enjoying the coolness wash over him. His pink tongue lolled out from his mouth and lapped up some well-needed water. It was fresh and cold from the mountain, and Oslo sighed in pleasure.
Before Oslo could do anything else, Oslo suddenly heard a shout. Frozen, Oslo looked to his right. There was a man-made footpath leading towards the mountain, and Oslo watched in surprise and fear as a group of four humans trekked along the treacherous path with poles and bags. Bending into the long grass, Oslo watched with fascination as the humans walked past him and continued their journey. It amazed Oslo that they couldn't smell his scent, although he'd been told human noses were far worse than a dog's nose. How could humans live, with such a poor sense of smell? It baffled the shepherd.
Once the humans had passed, Oslo stood from his hiding place and begun making his way down the valley. It was nearing midday, and the spring weather was certainly too hot to do any laborious walking. To keep him chilled, Oslo walked through the shallow stream, letting the water trickle gently over his paws. It was soothing as he walked, and Oslo was actually rather content today. His body was not overrun with exhaustion as usual, and he was feeling optimistic today.
