It was on very rare occasions that Blizzard found herself in this area of the city. It was a place her and Duke used to go to when they were just pups. She could always remember the times when they were first adopted, that the human's young pup would throw the sticks and play on the little set of bright colors where the adults would push him. The black and white collie sat down on the grass and stared at it for a while, her tail limp and ears drooping. She missed them. As much anger that built up inside her, how much hatred she can feel when she wants to, she always missed them. It was unsure to her how long she sat in front of that colorful set, but soon she pushed herself to her paws and turned toward the nature trail. On bright sunny days, around the time she was two, the older humans, male and female, would walk her and Duke down this path. They seemed content, and the scenery was beautiful, to both human and dog.
The second her paws hit the gravel, a pit filled her stomach and once again, her tail and ears drooped. Her head was low and tail dragged the ground behind her. As she looked out into the river, she felt her heart drop and she was forced once again, to stop and sit. Creeping to the waters edge, she flopped into a laying position, her head resting on her paws and a small, upset whine whispering from her throat. Why did you have to leave? Her mind whimpered, but her heart said other wise. Because you obviously weren't good enough. They had always loved Duke more than you. You are just too naive to see it! At that, she physically flinched. But, her mind was once more showing her the memories of her and her brother.
The day was mid summer, beautiful out. Not a single cloud in the sky and the suns bright rays shining down on the green grass. Duke loped excitedly beside her, tail lifted high and his tongue lolling out of his mouth. The female human barked something to the male, and the two sat down on what she had learned they called a 'bench' It didn't seem to interesting to the dogs. The humans just sat there, barked to one another, and stared out into the water. But they were keen enough to let the dogs off the leash and allowed them to play. It was Duke who made the first move, putting Blizzard on the defense. "You're dead meat, pup!" He howled, barreling into his smaller sister and sending her rolling into the grass. "Not so quick, fox-fur!" She barked back, flinging herself at him and nipping at his paws like she did to the sheep. After he was un-balanced, she threw all her weight into him, sending them both into the river. The humans jumped to their feet, barking and yowling at them. But, the two dogs were already on the shoreline. Howling and barking their laughter before they shook themselves off and jumped right back into playing.
Blizzard's heart tore at her chest, and once again another whine escaped her throat. She stared at her reflection in the water, her nose just touching it's chilly, yet refreshing surface. "Why did you leave me? All I did was love you... Please come back..I miss you.." She whined, her ears flattening as far as they could, her mind fogged with depression and anxiety. Why had they chosen Duke? Why couldn't they just remain a family? They were so happy that way..
