The small Swift Fox had spent the majority of her day away from the family. Jasper had taken the two kits out for a lesson in hunting, and she decided to get a little time to clear her head. Jasper had said she was being more irrational than usual and the comment had stirred her rage to flame even higher. The dark forest was comforting, the pine needles masking both her scent and the sound of her paw steps. Sometimes she wished she was a lone fox again, but every time she saw Abril and Adrian with the glow of their eyes and pelts so similar to hers, her body melted with the affection and the pride of being able to call herself their mother. As she walked, her ears pressed tightly to her head. Then suddenly, a scurrying sound. Mouse! Her mind shouted as the musky scent hit her nostrils.
Quickly, she flopped herself to the ground, ears pinning once again to her head as she waited for the grayish brown creature to come in her view. Her tail was lifted neatly off the ground, light amber eyes intently focused on the creature. There it was again, the scurrying. She waited. Her body tense, hackles raised. There! The mouse was dashing along the pine needles, and she didn't think twice. Quick, ash colored legs and ginger paws flew after the mouse, and within seconds, a bit to the neck left it hanging limply in the vixens jaws. A bark of triumph and she trotted over to the tree, her head raised high in her victory. Lucky for her, the tree had a low hanging, thick route. It was odd for foxes to climb trees, but the vixen always felt safer eating her kill high above the ground.
As she leapt up, her claws caught the tiny holes, pulling her to where she could lie on the branch with only her long, fluffy tail hanging down. She ate quickly, more so out of habit. If another, larger canine came by to fight for it, she could always defend it, but in the end, would have to flee. So, it was only a matter of minutes before she had finished the mouse and only a few drops of meat and blood littered both her lips and the ground below her. A small whine of accomplishment and she laid her head on tiny paws, her eyes closing. It had been a long day, and Jasper and the kits wouldn't be expecting her for a while, maybe a day or so. This seemed like a plenty good place to rest her head. As she began to doze lightly, her ears flicked to and fro, keeping alert and ready to spring at the sound of any movement nearby.
