Wanna Play? {Deni}

It was bright and sunny spring afternoon. It was determined nice enough for a couple to take their prized husky out on a walk. The female husky was over joyed to spend time with her owners, and would occasionally tug at the leash. Then she would be rewarded with a laugh and one of her owners speeding up so they could get to the park faster. The breeze was light, but wasn't harsh enough for Delilah to notice. The cooler weather always energized her. When the park was in sight, Delilah started to tug harder and her owners decided to jog with her there.

As soon as the leash was unhooked from her collar, Delilah took off like a lightning bolt. The sound of her owners laughing seemed to become distant as she got further away, tongue flapping in the wind. She came to a halt after a few seconds and looked around excitedly. Coming to the park was always fun. Her family was here, and there were other dogs she could meet. Coming to the park was like coming to a giant party, and she was going to be the life of it.

Delilah stretched her back, and let the spring sun hit her back. With a quick whine she pushed back up and looked around to locate her owners before continuing on her own. She didn't want to leave their line of sight too much. Though it was more the husky not wanting to leave her owners out her sight. If they started paying attention to another dog she knew she was going to have to steal the show. Delilah wasn't usually the jealous type but she was very protective of her family.

The nearly white husky trotted around the park, occasionally stopping to sniff at other humans and their dogs. She would try to play with a dog, but the owner would quickly shoo her away. Delilah would whine in disappointment and run back to her owners to be reassured that she was still lovable before running back to go explore more of the area. Delilah just hoped she would be able to find someone to play with, or maybe have a tiny exploration of the park she already knew so well.

She spent an equal amount of time in the city and in the wilds. Today had been a good day for food gathering. Some of the humans were sympathetic to her plight and they had given her plenty of food. Her belly was bulging slightly, and she hadn't felt so good in a very long time. She was pretty sure that the human pups had been very upset when she ran away instead of going with them, but she had no intention of being disappointed by those beings ever again. Humans were nothing but tall, hairless, disappointments. They were good for food sometimes, though.

Currently, she was at the park. She didn't really want any food, but she was sure that humans would leave some behind. She would probably stay here for a couple of days to eat on the left-overs, as much as she hated it. She rolled on to her back, wiggling down into the soft grass. She was laying in the shade of a large tree on the edge of the park, but she was starting to get bored. Her eyes looked over all of the dogs playing within eyesight of their owners, and they landed on a dog that looked remarkably like herself.

Making up her mind, she rolled over on her paws and trotted up to the dog. The other female was running around, probably trying to take advantage of her freedom while she could. "Well hey there! You could almost be my mirror, except of course I'm not a pure husky. Are you enjoying your time at the park?" She asked, sitting back on her haunches and cocking her head as her pink tongue lolled out of her mouth.

Delilah decided to take a short break as her two lovely humans broke out the picnic basket. She yipped excitedly at them as the placed a blanket down and started to organize their things. The first set up Delilah's spot, and pulled out two silver bowls for her. The female human poured water into one bowl, and spoke to the husky. Delilah just stared at her hopefully and gave her a quick lick on the hand. Finally food was placed in the other and Delilah dove in. She got tsked as a large mess started forming but it was shrugged off quickly.

Delilah was a girl on the move, she had to do everything fast. Of course she did allow her food to digest a bit before starting up again on her crazy running around. When she was a pup she learned the hard way about scarfing food. She had stomach ache and threw up on the couch. She was scolded, and from that day Delilah did her best to eat more carefully.

The husky lounged on the blanket and rolled on to her back. She watched the park with an upside down view before she saw a mirror image of herself across the park. Delilah rolled over quickly and lifted up from the blanket. The female trotted half distance before the other dog noticed her and made her way towards her. Delilah was able to observe that the female before her was not pure husky, but they looked awfully similar. Delilah just had a bit more grey. Her icy eyes glistened when she was spoken to.

"I always enjoy my day at the park. Today especially," Delilah pointed her nose towards her humans behind her, "My owners came with me today. I usually get to run about by myself, but when they come I get to play with them."

Delilah gave a small laugh. She wasn't like the other house-pets that were eternally trapped by a fence. Her owners trusted her enough to run around and not get in trouble, and that was nice. "Are you enjoying your time? Oh I'm Delilah."

With that she sat on her haunches with anticipation for the other dog to speak.

Kyra hid her distaste as the other female spoke of humans so fondly. She was much too kind to tell the female that her humans would eventually abandon her as if she had never mattered at all. Many house-dogs didn't realize this, and some humans were better about staying loyal than others. But only some. Kyra refused to take the chance of getting attached to a new human pack to only be abandoned again. The humans had sent her beloved sister away as if she wouldn't miss her, they had torn her world apart after the old one died. Nothing could ever forgive that. And if it wasn't bad enough, they didn't even try to stop her when she left. They didn't call her name, or look for her. They just let her go, probably happy to get rid of her.

But ah, she could only hope this dog wouldn't have that experience. So with that thought in mind, she smiled. "I'm glad you're having fun with your human pack. Some human pups were kind enough to give me scraps today." Her tail wagged back and forth a bit at the memory. Humans pups were okay, they were nice. They never yelled at her, or threw things at her when she was looking for food. They always wanted her, and some of them tried to keep her. But she knew the human pups - just like normal puppies - were at the mercy of what their parents wanted. They could never really be loyal to her in the way that they wanted to.

"I'm enjoying my time well enough. The park is very full today, its nice to meet new dogs." She smiled warmly. "It is delightful to meet you, Delilah. My name is Kyra." She cocked her head a bit, grinning.

Delilah looked around to see how many human pups were actually around after she listened to the look alike speak. She nodded, "Yes, the small humans are always so kind to us dogs. Plus scraps are the best. I actually just had some myself from my humans, and I had my normal meal."

Delilah was delighted with amount of food she was given today. She bowed her head slightly as a name was given, "What an interesting name. It is my pleasure to meet you as well, and I agree, it is always a pleasure to meet new dogs."

The Husky beamed at Kyra, and was curious to see if Kyra was with her humans. She looked around to see if there was anyone looking for her, but Delilah gave up after the sixth couple. The mix did lack a collar, but then again some house-pets ran around with out one. Delilah refocused her attention to the new dog, and gave her a friendly expression, "What brings you to the park today?"

Delilah really wanted to play and run around with Kyra, but it was best to check to see if she wasn't busy. If she said she was collecting scraps from the human pups there was a good chance she was in fact a stray, and was trying to get some food before she had to be elsewhere. Delilah assumed that's what most strays did, but she wasn't really sure herself. She hoped she wouldn't have to experience that anytime soon either. She really loved her humans, and her humans seemed to love her equally. It would be a shame if either of them left each other.

The female shifted to stand back on her feet and arched her back slightly until she was satisfied with the stretch, and returned to her usual sitting position. The day really was quite lovely, it would be a shame if Kyra wouldn't be able to have a little fun with her. Maybe she could even introduce Kyra to her humans, and she could get even more scraps or even better, a treat. Treats were delicious and all dogs should be able to get them, and plus Delilah was willing to share her treats with anyone who was friendly to her.

It was very clear to Kyra that the other female adored her humans. It gave her a bad taste in her mouth, but what could she do? Maybe the female would get lucky and her humans would love her forever. But humans were fickle creatures, and they didn't seem to understand that dogs could feel as strongly as them. Just like her humans who assumed that she wouldn't miss her sister terribly when they sent her off, or that she wasn't mourning for the loss of the old one just the same as them.

Ah, but maybe it wasn't fair of her to paint all humans with the same brush.. But how could she not? Surely the old one hadn't been bad, but maybe she was the exception and not the rule? Kyra pushed the thoughts from her head. Now wasn't the time for such thoughts. Now was the time for her to make a good friend, and she was sure that she would be there for Delilah if her humans ever let her down.

"The human pups are wonderful, just like our pups. Do you think your humans will ever have any?" She asked, looking passed the other female and at the humans. Maybe they did have pups, but they weren't here right now. She smiled and nodded her assent to Delilah, happy that perhaps she would be able to make a new friend today. Delilah reminded her of her sister a bit.

"Oh me? Well, I was hoping to be able to scrap up some food - which I have. I don't usually have time after that, but I thought the time would be well spent making a friend!" She said, smiling and wagging her tail behind her.

Her humans having their own young? Delilah glanced back with a curious glance. The two were smiling and seemingly enjoying each other's company. Delilah looked back to Kyra with a thoughtful look, "I'm not sure. If they do, I'm sure I will love and protect their pup. I will always guard and protect my family, no matter what."

Delilah was sure some dogs may have found her loyalty to humans to be a bit...crazed. She had always forgiven her humans for yelling at her when she did something wrong, and they had always petted her and hugged her when she asked for it. They would even have days like today, where they would all go out. Delilah was positive that a new human wouldn't change very many things. Plus Delilah would have an adorable human pup to love on and play with when it got bigger. Of course there were always the human pups here, but it didn't feel the same. There was a small chance that you would ever see that human again.

The Husky refocused her gaze on the mix when she gave her answer to why she was at the park. "Ah yes, scraps are the best in my opinion, and I'm glad you are spending time making friends. I do that too, but I have a lot of free time. I just go with the flow," Delilah gave a wag of her strong tail, "Why don't you usually have time?"

It had clicked with the Husky that Kyra was in fact a stray. So Delilah sat with anticipation, and the slight sense of worry. She hoped shew wasn't being overbearing with so many questions, but it wasn't like she got more in depth with stray life usually. To be completely honest with herself, Delilah rarely saw strays at the park. She assumed it was because most strays were either abandoned or never had the chance to live with humans. Though Delilah was sure she would find out the exact opposite and there are all kinds of dogs that cut through, but for now she lives in her happy, human filled world.

Her brown gaze followed the husky's blue one to where her humans were sitting. They did seem like nice folk, but Kyra couldn't trust them. How could she ever trust humans again? Her thoughts toward them seemed like a broken record. She shook them out of her head, there was nothing she could do. Delilah clearly adored her humans and she wouldn't hear anything bad about them, Kyra was sure. Besides, Kyra didn't want to make her new potential friend angry at her by insulting her humans. It would be the same as insulting someone's pack, and that was never good. "I'm sure, it is our honor-bound duty to protect the pups in our packs no matter what." She smiled. She had never been in a pack herself, but the instinct was there.

"Scraps are definitely better than the pellets," Kyra asserted with a nod, "But prey is the best. Have you ever tasted rabbit or squirrel? They are definitely better than anything the humans have ever given me." She smiled. Perhaps someday, when she was better at hunting, she could share a kill with Delilah. The husky's next question confused her a bit, wasn't it obvious? Maybe the other female just didn't want to seem rude in making assumptions. "I am a stray, my humans betrayed me." She said simply.
