Every time she heard the sounds of the forest in her ears, she just missed her home more and more. Was she even meant to live in the wild by herself? Who was to force this kind of life onto her? As the collie trotted through the forest, her ears were pinned and her body stiff. It had been a year now. A year since they just up and left her to fend for herself, and yet there was still this burning hatred that she just couldn't seem to shake from her fur. But, she was now much more than the scrawny little collie that walked away from that farm. Her sleek coat rippled with muscles, and she was quick, tactical, much more educated than she had been when the humans left.
Something scurried in the bushes and the small dog instinctively dropped into a crouch. Her ears pulled pack, tail lifted just above the ground. From her spot, she could just see the long ears of a light brown forest hare. Step by step, the collie dragged herself forward, her paws gliding across the ground silently. Just as she was in range, the rabbit detected her and took off. But, this was the most fun of the hunt right here. Pushing off with her strong hind legs, the collie raced after the hare. The hare was fast, but she was faster, gaining with every couple of paw steps. As soon as the hunt began it was over with a swift bite to the neck.
The dog lowered herself to the ground under a shady tree and nudged the rabbit with her nose. She wasn't exactly hungry, but it had been a day since her last meal, and if she didn't eat soon, she would become less alert, weaker, and that was too dangerous in the wild. She sniffed at the prey for a few moments before she finally took a bite, the flesh feeling dry and tasteless in her mouth. And above her head the birds sang, the trees swayed in the breeze, leading the dog to wonder what in the world they could be so happy about.
